Many other variations of quartz occur when the stone forms in the presence of other minerals that give the stone many distinct colors. Smokey Quartz gets its color from Inclusions of aluminum that are darkened and made visible when natural radiation emitted from the surrounding rock alters them. Its natural clarity ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to an almost-opaque brownish-gray or black .
