The Nepali Singing Bowl and its Tibetan and Chinese counterparts can have its origins traced all the way back to pre-Buddhist Shamanic tradition in South Asia with the cultures use of Bronze Bells. The earliest of these instruments are found in in China dating back to the Shang Dynasty from the 16th–11th centuries BCE. These bells are some of the oldest bronze artifacts that have been found in China. Historically these bowls and bells we’re not intended to produce the continuous singing tones that we use today, instead they were struck as bells in ceremony often for the purpose of “punctuating” prayer.

Singing Bowl craftsmanship

Historically, it’s been said that these bowls to be made made of an alloy consisting  seven of various metals, each associated with a heavenly body. Those commonly mentioned are Gold, Silver, Mercury, Copper, Iron, Tin and Lead, although modern bowls are not known to contain Gold, Silver Mercury or Lead. The final ingredients for the alloy then go through the process of casting where the different metals are heated to melting temperatures where they mix freely before being poured into a mold in which they recrystallize as one metal alloy. The casting is then hammered by hand into the desired shape and adjusted until the desired tone of the bowl is reached.
