Historical Folklore

This crystal’s name comes from the Greek word selene, meaning “moon”.

There is a legend that tells of God taking a breath during the process of creating divine light. When God exhaled, the particles fell to Earth and formed into selenite.

In ancient Mesopotamia, selenite was found in sick rooms to keep evil spirits at bay.

Some believe that this crystal can be hung on fruit trees to increase their bounty.

Selenite is thought to be especially strong in grids, as it is a powerful cleanser for other gemstones.

Geology

Selenite is considered a sedimentary rock. It is a crystallized form of gypsum created from evaporated saline water. This crystal is also considered an inorganic form of selenium, a mineral used for immune system disorders. Selenite deposits can be found in the United States, Russia, Mexico, France, Poland, Germany, Austria, Greece, and England.

If you wish to cleanse this stone you can do so by moving it through the smoke of sage. Selenite readily dissolves in water and as such should be kept away from it.
