They typically form inside pockets created within volcanic rocks that have filled with silica rich fluid from the volcanic area. As the silica precipitates out of the solution it coats the cavity in thin layers of of stone. Each time this process repeats a new layer is added upon the last creating the distinct lace like patterns found in many agates.
