The holidays and the end of the year is a time for reflection and a time to look forward to the new year. During this time of the year there are many social events; these events can place a burden on our energy. How we approach our decorating will help balance the flow of energy in our spaces.

As we go thru extremely cold temperatures in the Midwest, balancing the cold with items that represent warmth or the element of fire will go a long way to promote a happy home. To illustrate the Yin/Yang, winter is the most Yin time of the year, whereas summer is the most Yang time of the year. To balance the cold, Yin, we need a bit of warmth Yang.

COLOR

Fire is a Yang element. Items that represent the Fire Element are candles, a Christmas tree, Christmas lights and the color red. A fireplace with a roaring fire along with fresh baked warm cookies and hot chocolate not only brings balance to a space but happiness as well. Be mindful not to overuse the color red, as too much can promote burn out or emotional outbursts.

CHRISTMAS TREE PLACEMENT

One of the best places is the East Area, as it represents the element of Wood as well as Health, Family and Ancestors.  It also represents strength.

Another area is the Southeast.  It represents Wealth and Abundance.  This is another wood element location where the tree is in balance with the Feng Shui elements.

Third great location for a Christmas tree is the South.  It represents the Fame and Reputation area and the element of fire. The triangle shape represents fire. The Christmas tree is a big triangle that represents fire.  The wood of the tree nurtures fire, that is part of the productive cycle of the elements, they are in harmony.

Using a live pine tree enhances the senses and cleans the air.  There is nothing that compares to the fresh scent of pine this time of year.  Essential oils are a great alternative if using a manufactured Christmas tree, scents can have a big effect on our emotions.

PLANTS

Live plants such as an amaryllis bulb, daffodil bulbs and poinsettias not only make great gifts but can also enhance the space. They are cherished because of their beauty and color, and also because of plant’s innate ability to purify the air we breath.

No matter how you celebrate the end of the year, be sure to approach it with a feeling of gratefulness. Gratefulness for what we have received and will receive. Being grateful  enhances a feeling of well being and welcomes abundance.
