The ancient Romans called April “Aprilis”, meaning “to open”. This was perhaps a reference to the blossoming and growth during the first full month of Spring. Today, we subscribe to the idea that a birthstone is exclusively resonant with those born during the month. Historically, however, people were known to wear different birthstones for each month, believing they could offer benefits to everyone. Here are the four stones associated with April.
The diamond is the modern birthstone for April in the US, UK, and India. It also happens to be the ancient Ayurvedic birthstone for this month. A stone of purity, it brings love and clarity to relationships, helping strengthen bonds in partnerships. Diamonds are often seen as a sign of commitment and trust in relationships, being the most widely used stone for engagement and wedding rings.
In Great Britain Clear Quartz is though of as an alternative to diamond as an April birthstone. It is known as the King of Quartz and is a widely used, potent master healer. Ancients believed that these crystals took a breath every one hundred years. Using Clear Quartz opens the mind and the heart to higher guidance.
In many traditions, sapphire was the birthstone of April. This beautiful blue crystal heightens intuition, mental clarity, and spiritual power, which can all assist in personal and spiritual growth.
This is the ancient Tibetan birthstone for April. A symbol of hope and purity to the ancient Romans, opal inspires love, luck, and happiness. It soothes and clears the physical body, illuminates positive emotions and helps you to release outgrown issues and emotions.
