Historical Folklore

The Mayans and Aztecs made exceptional use of obsidian in their societies, using it for weaponry, jewelry, and protective talismans.

 Obsidian has been fashioned into tools by both humans and our ancient hominid ancestors since as far back as 2.6 million years ago at the very beginning of what we consider to be the stone age today.

Geology

Obsidian is a type of igneous rock not a true crystal that forms when molten lava cools very quickly, not allowing enough time for minerals to precipitate and crystalize. It is sometimes referred to as volcanic glass due to the lack of crystal structure. Black is the most common coloration, however many other variations exist and are often distinguished by their unique composition and impurities or the conditions in which they formed. This unique silver variety of obsidian gains its silver flash from small inclusions of water vapor trapped inside the obsidian through its formation. These vapor bubbles are distributed in multiple layers of nearly flat inclusions which reflect back the light as a metallic silver flash. Some other varieties include Rainbow Obsidian, Golden Sheen Obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian and and Mahogany Obsidian. While various varieties of Obsidian can be found globally, Silver Sheen Obsidian deposits have only been found in Central America.

Silver Sheen Obsidian resonates with the heart and root chakras. Its high vibration also is of benefit to the throat and third eye. Some believe it can cleanse all chakras.

Cancer is thought to connect with obsidian.

Health Folklore

Like black obsidian, this variety is thought to help with the digestive and circulatory systems. It is also believed to help with detoxing.
