There is a wisdom and a subtleness to not caring for many things.  Caring, you see, is an inborn flame within human nature that cannot be denied.  One may pretend that He/She does not care but in doing so one damages not only self but the very being of those to whom it is Practicing Detachmentdirected.  Perhaps it is ego, avarice or greed that projects that not caring energy  toward others.

Let me suggest to you that there two types of not caring.  One is selfish and self-centered. “I know what I want (need) and no one is going to stand in my way of accomplishing it.”  Then there is the second other. “I know what is needed, but I don’t care, I will have no expectations of the results.”  This second one implies  that I will do all I can without interfering with the results.  I will honor the result.

Here is a story that illustrates the second “I don’t care.” Many years ago a Native American Chief came to his Medicine Man. “Come,” he said. “My daughter is dying, she needs you.”  The Chief hurried back to his dwelling. Meanwhile, the Medicine Man gathered his herbs and other tools and walked slowly to the Chief’s teepee. When he arrived, the Chief was upset and complained.  Medicine Man simply set about his task of lighting and mixing herbs, and  Rattling, Drumming, and  chanting. He called upon his Spirit helpers and chanted the appropriate songs. In between he cried “I don’t Care ! I don’t Care.”  Ending his task, he gathered his tools together and went back to his Medicine Lodge.

The Chief ran to him before he had even reached it crying ,”Come, she is dying, come quickly.” Medicine Man turned and went back to perform the same healing ceremony. He then returned to his lodge. Later that day, the Chief came to say that his daughter had died.

Now the Medicine Man had done everything within his understanding, just as many fine Doctors today will do for you or your loved ones. They put all the knowledge they have into the healing, showing their caring by their tireless efforts.  As well as their letting go of the situation.  They cared enough, then stepped aside.

Here is the secret: if you love something with all your heart, let it go. If it returns, OK.  If it does not return, it is because you have sent it out to others.  They may hold onto it or return it to you. You “do not care.”

Here are some stones which may assist you in saying “I don”t care.”
