These mugs are designed and printed by Atala for Crystal Life. The name Dala is a shortened version of “Dala horse” (Dalahäst), indicating a horse in the style of the artists of the Swedish province of Dalarna. The horse has been carved in that province since at least the sixteenth century. It is often combined, as here, with flowers in the kurbits style of decorative painting, also associated with the Dalarna province and found on many Swedish household articles in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today the horse and stylized painting are often used as a symbol for Swedish culture.
