Nature Spirit Photography – Micro-Man

Microman Here is a nature spirit only 2 1/2″ tall, and the story that goes with him.

I had a new micro lens for my camera; I got it to take photos of jewelry for my website. A Nikon 65 mm.One warm late summer day I decided it would be fun to experiment with what could be seen in the natural world up close. So I attached the macro lens to my Nikon D90 and headed out to my favorite location – LeRoy Oakes Nature Preserve in St. Charles, IL. I greeted the nature deva at the start of my walk, and announced my light-hearted intention.

I felt inclined to go a different direction than I usually do. I walked through the woods and prairie areas, the humid summer day ripe with the scent of green things growing, golden prairie flowers, and cicada chirring. Suddenly a little fairy child appeared in front of me. She was very excited and was twirling about. “I know where there’s a tiny spirit,” she said. “Follow me!” It sounded like a happy invitation, and on a scan there was nothing wrong in her sweet invitation, so I started down the path after her.

But it was such a pretty day, with the sun shining through the summer leaves, that I kept pausing. At which point she would dance back to me. “This way,” she would say, doing a pirouette and skipping forward.

Eventually we made our way to the stream, and the fairy invited me to sit on a log, enjoy the flowing water, and relax into meditation. I sat there for a time then remembered my mission. “Where is the little nature spirit,” I asked.

The fairy child directed my attention to a “dead” log nearby, and as happens on occasion, I saw nothing until the fairy drew my attention to a specific location, where there was a tiny 2 1/2″ very dignified wood spirit looking over his domain: the shore and the water.

It was quite an eye opener for me, to take his photograph. For I soon realized that in spite of how physically small he was in my world, in his world he was very big, and packed a lot of spirit energy, dignity and wisdom.

So if you enjoy nature spirit photography, try this exercise: put a different length lens on your camera from what you usually work with – and see what there is to be seen at that distance!

Cosmic Portals – The Significance of Field Integrity

wormhole Field integrity is absolutely essential for long-term work and personal health in any area of life. Yet many people, and novice energy workers as well, do not understand this concept.

Every field of study, every person, every life form, exists in its own merkaba, or set energy field. This is their field, frequency, or resonance.

When you go to communicate with any life form, in this dimension or in some other world, you consciously or unconsciously adapt yourself to its frequency. That’s so you can be understood. Otherwise, you would be talking to the air. Your message would not be received by the other form because you are not connecting to its communication frequency.

A blanket refusal to identify with other frequencies is the situation in parts of our world today. It is a very sad fundamentalist set of mind that says my way or the highway. It refuses to adapt at all to the other energies that are present. So it ends up talking to the air – or only to others who think like it does. It does not attempt to adapt or understand or identify with anything other than its own small world.

That myopic set of mind actually extends throughout our culture at more subtle levels as well. We identify with our crowd – be it football players or ballerinas – and we don’t tend to reach out to any other frequency. Now this may serve us well, if all we want to do is play football. But if we are suddenly thrust into another set of circumstances – if we have to move, or our football days are over, or our boss is not interested in football – then we have to adapt, even if we don’t want to, or we will fail to fully connect to the people of that “world.”

On an even grander scale, humanity is myopic in believing that we are the only “group” occupying this earth. That, too, prevents actual communication. There are many other intelligent life forms co-existing with us, but on different frequency waves or bands. What they do and need may very well affect our personal lives. Since we share this earth with them, it behooves us to learn to see these life forms, and to understand existence from their point of view as well.

As human beings, we occupy a certain frequency. That is not the only frequency that can exist in this universe, and the span of frequencies is evolving and expanding, just as we humans and the universe are evolving. But if we don’t want to identify with and understand other points of view – other frequencies – we are in the same boat as the staunchest fundamentalist who refuses to recognize other human points of view.

Now here’s the rub – to be able to see into other realms, you have to first be assured you understand your own personal world, or merkabah. You need to be facile and able to turn around inside your own skin, to see what you look like from above, below, each side, front, behind, and at your core. You need to see where you start and where you end. Because this is your home base. It is from the security of your own existence that you can safely venture out into other worlds, other frequencies, and then return to yourself.

The other side to this ability to see and travel about through dimensions or frequencies is the necessity not to get too comfortable in the world to which you have gone. Otherwise you might not come back. You can get so comfortable in that other world – say that of the faeries or the angels or some extra-terrestrial world – that you forget what you’ve got in your own personal world on earth. It is part of the Celtic lore that some folks who have traveled to the faery world have chosen to return there because they like it so much better than our gross world – they have simply disappeared from their small community. And some people who travel to other worlds and do not understand what is occurring, because our culture has not to date recognized this phenomena, appear “daft” to others because they are still in their physical body but their focus, their attention, is elsewhere.

Here’s an exercise that is very useful for those who want to travel about through time and space – or who are traveling already but need to learn to control their abilities. Practice “Be Here Now.” Whatever you are doing, set yourself a time period to completely engross and identify yourself with that action. If your attention wanders to some other task, tell yourself you’ll think about it afterwards, and jot a note to yourself. Then go back to the task at hand, whole-heartedly.

You’ll be surprised how at peace you are, whether it is washing the dishes or plowing a field, you’ll now get the opportunity to move into the “zone” where you are in rhythm with the task. Then, at the end of the allotted time, reach a point of resolution and turn your attention to something else, experiencing an equal amount of concentration for that issue, too.

In this way, you can enjoy personal fulfillment as well as train yourself to not become too attached to any course of action.

Nature Spirits – Different Views of the Same Lifeform

Greenman-Ryerson Here are three different views of the same Greenman. This is a fun project to undertake for yourself, and it is also an exercise in developing your capacity for nature spirit portraiture.

Usually, when a tree develops the capacity to manifest a recognizable, well-developed nature spirit image in his/her trunk, or a nature spirit works with the tree energy to manifest such an image, you will find other images in the tree as well.

A general rule for nature spirit photographers is the same as that for any photographic study – examine the subject from different angles and points of view.

I will often walk around the entire tree, looking up and down. I’ll try shifting consciousness due to the fact that a tree or a nature spirit will frequently manifest different types of beings whose home world exists in different frequencies from each other. Even so, very often when someone else looks at my photograph, they will see and point out another nature spirit I myself had not seen, although it manifested in the photo.

What you see depends upon the frequency into which you are looking. That’s a good lesson about life itself. Changing your perspective will often change your understanding of what is occurring in your world!

In this situation, I have been studying this tree on repeated trips to this nature preserve. I originally stopped to look at the tree because the nature spirits asked me to do so – they often request this of me on my outings. At first I did not see anything. Then, suddenly, I saw the two dark faces. It was only when I processed the image back home that I saw the greenman, quietly facing to the right, and after that his bear familiar below him.

I went back several times after that, to photograph the tree in different lights and different camera settings. I love the exquisite detail the tree and the tree spirits developed on the greenman’s face, and on his facial armor. The greenmen and greenwomen are so precise and neat in their features!

Also, when you are out on a photographic shoot, it is beneficial to request the assistance of the resident nature beings. I always pause to respectfully acknowledge their work and their care of their area, and request their assistance, should there be anything they would like photographed. On an entire afternoon’s outing, I consider myself fortunate if I come back with even one really good photo of a mature spirit being.

Cosmic Portal – It’s a whole new ballgame, folks!

redwood-dreams Quite a number of experienced energy workers have been getting the same message from their inner team – it’s a whole new ballgame, folks! Scrap everything you thought you knew and start over!

The world is going through such a profound paradigm shift that its energy no longer functions the way it once did. The way you used to do things, and it worked well, no longer holds true.

Yet some things remain always the same. The secret is figuring out what is remaining the same – and what is changing.

What are some of the consciousness changes that are a commonality? It has to do with your personal sources of spiritual support – support that comes from other frequencies or dimensions or worlds (different terms for the same situation). All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, your open pipeline to your inner team just disappears. It dries up, or becomes so clogged that nothing is getting through.

An experienced energy worker has gone through this sensation before, and knows it is time to work with the internal plumbing – or, as many see it, the grid fields of light that go throughout the universe, and whose individual strands do look like our physical plumbing tubes!

Spiritual leaders of different traditions know this common experience by different names. I’ve heard Christian leaders refer to it as a dry time, when they seem to have lost their connection to the Christ energy and don’t know why. Grandfather Buffalo has referred to it in his blogs as a time of chaos.

One commonality among all the spiritual savants at such a time is the awareness that we are immersed in something more general than just our own personal situation. It is something affecting a large field of spirit and this wave is descending through the different planes of consciousness. (See my blog of last week to for a definition of these planes.) The spiritual leaders – the ones with access to the higher levels of consciousness, not necessarily the outer leaders – experience these sensations first. Then, just as suddenly as the wave appeared – it disappears, clarity returns – but we discover that the next level of consciousness people experience it – we might say the staff of that leader’s energy world. Then suddenly the wave passes through them, and the general public who is not so familiar with energy work begins to experience the chaos. At this point, these general public people start reaching out for support – and the leaders and staff can now say with certainty, “Don’t worry, you’ll be ok, your inner support is still there, have faith!”

For all of us, when hitting this common experience, it marks a period when, to survive, we withdraw from the rush of our duties to re-examine and re-orient ourselves and our course of energy. This withdrawal may of necessity occur in the middle of a very active outer life on your part when you feel you have no time to focus on the issue – or during a time of relative inactivity when you have no pressing external duties and have plenty of time to wonder what is occurring. Your personal situation does not seem to have affected the appearance of this situation.

Some of the reasons for the appearance of this experience are:

You are in the chaos time, when one field of energy is dissolving and another is coming into being.

You are in a pioneering/settling time, when a new course of action is appearing but the rules have not yet been established.

Cosmic alignments are shifting so profoundly that it is gradually affecting all the grid alignments down through the fields of consciousness and into the physical and you need to hold on while these alignments settle in.

Someone on your team is working intensely on another issue. This can occur when you are working with someone specific, say a muse in the creative arts, and their attention is focused on assisting a specific issue that someone else may be facing and that is occupying their specific resources.

What do you do?

Listen to the messages that are coming through. Your team will get information to you via whatever conduits are available to them. Messages many of us have experienced are “Don’t worry, we’re here, everything will be fine,” “Stay quiet, don’t act yet, the time is not yet right,” “Just act, you inherently know what to do, and we are guiding your steps,” “You’ve been through this before, you know you’ll survive.”

Call intensely. Sometimes totally focusing your energies on re-connecting to your inner team helps, but don’t be concerned if there is no response. They are working through this situation from their side as well. But do know that their protection is surrounding you, just in a different way: they’ve been working with this recurring experience for eons of time and have set up “rescue plans” that automatically go into place.

Go back to your core positions, and realign yourself to your core values. When you get back to that internal source point, your team can more easily reach you. It may result, as many of us are experiencing now, in the need to totally, radically, and in faith accept that what you formerly believed was true – no longer is your truth. You need to start over, restructure your world, and adhere to core values.

It’s time for you to pull together all of your previous knowledge and learning with your team and use your own common sense. Don’t do anything extreme, re-examine and rectify any deviations, and – Just wait.

In good times, when this occurs, my team laughs and congratulates me: “Congratulations, you mastered that energy.” Pause. “Now you get a bigger playpen.” And I feel a sudden shift, as my energy expands to another area of focus – and I am back working to scope out the rules of this field or merkaba or “playpen,” which may be radically different from the rules of where I was before. In light field terms, it is because this new merkaba has and is generating its own fields of energy, whose rules for internal travel are different from that of any other field.

Every situation is really just an energetic merkaba of some size, and breaking that knowledge down abstractly, you can refer to it as simply a playpen – a structured enclosure housing a situation. It helps detach yourself from a situation to look at it this way. Read my book We Are Not Alone where I delve into this experience in greater depth.

And, of course, poetry can express pages of information with simple images, so I leave you with this poem:

The Footprints Prayer

One night I had a dream…

I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and
Across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
One belonged to me, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before us,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
There was only one set of footprints.

I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life
This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
You would walk with me all the way;
But I have noticed that during the
most troublesome times in my life,
There is only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why in times when I
needed you the most, you should leave me.

The Lord replied, “My precious, precious
child. I love you, and I would never,
never leave you during your times of
trial and suffering.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.

Cosmic Portal – Planes of Consciousness

What are the planes of consciousness through which a soul descends from source into solid matter? What keeps us anchored in matter? Different traditions have explained the process in different ways.

Several decades ago, to clarify the process for myself, I drew up this chart. It is based on the understanding of consciousness as explained by the respected yoga philosopher Sri Aurobindo. His understanding is itself based in various ancient yogic teachings, which are often adapted to modern times and modern understandings.

Years after drawing up this chart, I realized that when you go below the inconscient level – the level of total darkness – you break through to the source light again. That is, even the inconsient level is held inside the source itself and the next step below that is the return to source.

Working with the merkaba, or star of David, you can see the movement from spirit into matter occurs from both the masculine and feminine points of view. The so-called masculine religions see the descent from the unmanifest spirit into matter; the so-called feminine perspective see the ascent from the vast cauldron of potential into conscious form. Where these two perspectives join together – where the two triangles overlap in the middle – is where most of existence has its strongest form. It’s where we live our everyday lives.

I offer this chart to you as food for thought, and welcome any comments.

Universal consciousness	The consciousness that always was and always will be – eternal, infinite, universal. The source of all else in creation, inside everything and beyond everything. At its ultimate source it is one. At that point at which it becomes aware of its own existence and observes itself duality begins: the observer and the observed.	All creation has blossomed forth from here and ultimately returns to here. This is the source of all. It exerts a magnetic pull on earth existence, which seeks consciously or unconsciously to return to its all-fulfilling source.	Exists in all other levels, in all polarity constructs such as good-evil, dark-light, strong-weak. Its highest point is oneness and its lowest inconscient matter.
Individualized consciousness (the soul)	All creation is formed of particles of consciousness of the Supreme that are shaped to meet particular purposes, such as color, emotions, thoughts or physical forms from manufactured items to stones to human beings.	This is a part of the Supreme that has been sent into the earth plane to acquire experiences. The choices and events happening to each particle cumulatively shape it in a very unique way, so that its experiences as it moves towards perfection are unlike those of any other particle.		Begins when duality begins. Ranges from simple particles that, upon the dissolution of the form return to the universal consciousness, to the highest earth form, the human soul, which carries the essence of its lessons from each life into the next. When weak: can be overwhelmed by the world and retreat into silence. When strong: serves as the inner pilot for the form, guiding it in harmony with the Will of the Supreme.
Heart	The seat of the soul in a human. The keystone or pivotal point between the inner and outer worlds and in the body chakra system between the mind and the vital. Its function is true love and oneness.	This is a magnetic force that connects the soul both to its father source, the realm of spirit; and its mother source, the world. It keeps the soul constantly moving between the two, seeking to identify with and please both.		Carnal love does not come from this plane but from the vital. Weak: indifference to the world. Strong: oneness with the world.
Mind	The mental plane. Organizing and discriminating. Searches and envisions from the inner worlds to manifest on earth.	Organizes, orders, inspects. Takes things apart and examines them.		Weak: chaotic. Strong: clarity and order
Vital (Life-energy)	Life-energy, emotions. Enables soul to move about on earth.	Works with polarity constructs – opposition of magnetic forces (love/hate, dynamism/lethargy) – until being learns to master them through detachment, identification & transformation. Works with flows of energy through chakras and meridians.		Weak: overwhelmed by emotions that can’t control, see-sawing between polarities; becomes rigid in effort to experience only one side of a polarity (peace not anger); or shuts down in effort, leading to lethargy and illness. Strong: calm dynamism, balance, vibrant health
Physical	The plane of solid matter on which a soul or consciousness-form manifests its purpose and function. The playing field.	Gives the soul a material form through which it can learn to manifest its will or God’s Will on earth.		Ranges from the subtle to the gross physical. Weak: the body construct breaks apart and death occurs. Strong: the soul can protect itself and enact its will with physical matter.
Inconscient Matter	Matter is at its densest here. The Supreme has packed Itself so tight that at its base there is no apparent action; yet inside its core it, too, is the light of the Supreme. Some feel the earth-game will not be done until even this plane has been enlightened and transformed – a goal uncountable millions of years in the future – and all earth existence becomes one with the Supreme, absorbed back into Itself through the oneness of Light; the Game is Done.	The anchor of the physical world inside the universal consciousness of the Supreme. The base of the Supreme’s game of light and dark; the base from which the growth of light is measured.		Weak: the dark forces of the universe take their existence from here. Total lethargy and inability of the individual form to help itself. Strong: The powerful base of a form in the material world. Gives stability & determination so that vision can overcome all opposition and become material reality.

From Our Friends – Buffalo Spirit

I have been visiting this small Downers Grove Park for about 20 years. I questioned why this tree was leaning so much to the east. In summer with all for its foilage, it looks like it could touch the ground.

Finally, this April, the buffalo tree spirit asked to show himself. A buffalo weighs about 2000 lbs, so even in spirit this tree bears his awesome stature.

In the bend of the tree, facing east, this massive face appears complete with chin hairs and dark piercing eyes. He seems to bleed in the area around the chest.

I’m humbled that he choose me to show him. I’ll lose sight of him again when the leaves appear.

Nature Spirits – The Power of Waiting

Waiting. Patience. These energies come in very handy when photographing nature spirits.

I learned their value from a wonderful nature photography instructor, Fred Drury. He took his nature photography class to Starved Rock, where we were to practice winter photography. As the class moved busily about the landscape, looking high and low for interesting views from macro to pano, Fred quietly set up at the edge of a pond. And waited. And waited. Clicked a series of photos then went back to waiting.

Finally, I asked him what exactly he was doing. He explained quietly that he was waiting for the fast-moving clouds overhead to separate so that the sun behind them would come through and light up a small waterfall across the pond. He explained exactly how the sun was going to hit the waterfall, and how it was shifting position over the course of the hour he stood there. He would have only a few seconds to get his shot before the puffy, scenic clouds would again close over the sun, so he was watching their movement carefully. He explained how he was moving ever so slightly up, down, left, right, close up and distance, to catch a slightly different nuance to the scene. He also described the camera setting he was using to get just the right speed for the water, while stopping the movement of the trees above the falls, and was doing a series he would then merge in Photoshop – long white water ribbon with fast stop-action on the trees.

I remember that often, when I am out on a shoot. When I see a nature spirit whose image I really want to capture, I stop there and make it a long study. I walk around the tree or rock, to see what angle is best. I wait for the light to change.

You can see the difference such attention to details – and patience – makes in these two sets of images. The top set is of Grandfather Rock, a favorite site of mine in Colorado. Seen from one angle, his image is very hard to discern, and the dappled sunlight obscures him further. But seen from another point of view, grandfather’s visage is distinct, his character showing nicely.

Below are two views of a female troll, living in a linden tree. She and I had many an interesting conversation, and I was determined to do her long resonant nose justice. So I went back numerous times, trying different times of day, of year, and of lighting. See what a difference waiting can make!

If you really want to do a nature spirit portrait, then making the tree or rock a photographic study will often provide you with outstanding results. Tip: when other nature photographers are bummed out because it is overcast, I am very happy. That is beause the light is now even over the tree or rock, and the nature spirit images are more distinct!

Cosmic Portal – When Do We Lose?

There is a lot of talk lately about how our world civilizations are “losing” so many things… jobs, investments, opportunities.

I’m thinking of all the people who’ve come into our store looking for a stone or energetic information to help them because they recently lost their job. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or a victim, the customers have very often expressed gratitude because now they can go in a new direction, one they may have dreamed about but felt they needed to be responsible instead. Some want to study yoga, martial arts, massage, chiropractic or naturopathic disciplines. Suddenly free of all their “oughts,” and having discovered that doing what they should do has only made them unhappy, they are giving themselves permission to do what they love. They tell us what a sense of freedom they now feel – it may be less money in their pocket – but money seems to come and go anyway – and now they wake up each morning glad to be alive.

Did these people win or lose?

Something similar happened to me, back in 1995 when I started Crystal Life. My inner team kept –literally – nagging me until I agreed to quit my comfortable job with steady pay at the United Nations and set up a company that would work with subtle energy and healing gemstones. I told them if I did this, I would end up on the street – and I wanted them to know it would be all their fault! Finally, unable to deter the nagging, I jumped. Instead of a free fall into the void, I found my team knew better than I did, and I found solid ground very quickly under my feet. And a level of happiness I had not known before.

Sometimes winning can mean losing. Such as when we pretend to be something to win our goal, such as a specific type of job – then we find we can’t enjoy the goal because it does not really suit us. Or we win by making someone else look bad – and find out our own energies have changed so much that we can no longer be free and open in our relations with others.

So if you feel you are losing right now – as if things aren’t going your way – learn to talk with your inner guides. They can help you immensely for they can see into the future, and above the physical world into the world of energy that forms matter.

Nature Spirits – The Balsam and the Birch: What Happened Next

A Nature Deva in New Hampshire decided that, in her domain, she would match the rather stern, silent but hardy balsams with the softer, gentler white paper birches. The balsams could help support the birches in the winter, and the birches could help soften the balsams’ stern tendencies.

I came upon this story, and a loving balsam-birch couple, one warm sunny summer day. I was walking through the woods when I heard them whispering to each other “I love you” – a deeper male voice and a softer female voice. I stopped to watch and listen, and took some photographs. It was clear the birch was soon to die, the balsam was heart-broken at the prospect, and they were professing their enduring love for each other.

I have a lovely photograph of them kissing – see to the left and immediately below. And I wrote about the story in my book Nature Spirits, Spirit Guides and Ghosts. But…what happened next?

Over the next few years, on my summer trips to New Hampshire, I would walk the woodland path and check in with my balsam and birch colleagues. The photos I took over the years are heart-breaking in the degree of love and loss the balsam still felt for the birch, and how hard he worked to just keep her physical presence with him. It was also touching because it showed the profoundly deep and enduring feelings a tree had for another tree. Love is, indeed, universal.

Here is a photograph several years after the first. You can see the distinct face of the balsam, staring lovingly at the face of the birch. You can also see the longing of the balsam, still reaching out to the birch, who is now dead and beginning to pull away as she starts to slide down the hill on which the two stand.

Here, another few years later, the balsam is still attempting to hold his beloved birch close to him, the effort now straining his branches to the point of breaking.

I need to learn of what the experience will be like to travel through time with physical body. Astral I’ve experienced many times but never physical body. How long will I stay if I leave with them? and What am I suppose to be looking for?

These are the type of questions I need answered so I feel comfortable enough to do it but I feel paralyzed and choose not to go. I promised them I would consult and learn how to communicate better so I wouldn’t be afraid if they give me a little time to do that and I promised to go.

I’m not sure how much time I will have before they return and I want to feel safe enough to do as I promised. Can you help? Please consult with your team I believe two of your team members are as well mine. Thank you.

Authentic guides will work with you to establish a field of trust, so that when they request something of you, you know it is safe to perform that action.

The next time the life forms come to communicate with you, discuss this with them. Ask them to help you build up to this level in smaller steps; ask them what type of situation they suggest they be tested on first – that is, what are they capable of doing, and how can they show this to you.

Have them set a specific test, and see if it is met. If it is met, then you need to do your part and believe they can do that type of action. Gradually build up with them to the more unusual actions. So I’m further along in your book. Wow!!! I feel as if you wrote this book for me. I just read the part of needing to focus when you’re somewhere else. THANK YOU!!! I never knew why I see static everywhere all the time and could never explain it to the doctors it is not describable. It’s energy!!!

If I had to describe what it looked like I would say energy. And when I close my eyes I could never describe what I see… I think it’s the universe so much movement and color and spirits that are so clear it looks animated!!! I’m letting go of fear and I did it!!!! I listened and got the message and delivered and I feel so amazing.
